We have some exciting plans for Doves Landing School going forward! There are now accounts set up for alternate (still tax deductible) donation opportunities that can more directly invest in our students' experience at Doves Landing. First, we are looking into acquiring a school bus- a real school bus, not to completely replace our "walking school bus" concept, (exercise and knowing how to use pedestrian facilities, etc. is still important) but to enable field trip coordination in a way that is simpler and more expected by our destination hosts.
School buses have become remarkably cheap to acquire. Any amount is worth considering putting toward donations to this fund. However, we would rather not "cheap out" on something like this as children's safety and comfort are factors that cannot be set aside to "cut corners". Another donation fund is our Ocean Science Camp fund. Some parents will already be familiar with our family camp trips to Catalina Island at Campus By the Sea (CBS) as well as field trips to the same Catalina location with organizations such as Long Beach Marine Institute (LBMI). We have already been in talks with Catalina School Adventures about pricing and timings for their marine science camps in the same vein as LBMI had provided to Doves Landing in the past! It costs approximately $500 per student to go for the most ideal amount of time, which is a 4 day science camp. Science camps are usually in the spring, and since this is a long drive (boats leave from Long Beach) we are only able to tentatively make plans without having funding set aside well in advance.
Other funds may be announced as we find and realize the need, but these two are already above and beyond donations to the Doves Landing general operating fund. Thank you again for all donations to Doves Landing!
